Polypipe WMS provided a hybrid sustainable drainage system for a Ministry of Defence site to cope with high-flow water run-off and difficult site constraints.
The initial project specification included the use of a concrete box culvert. However concerns regarding rising material costs and the performance of the product in times of heavy rainfall ensured that an alternative solution was required. Working closely with W Longs, Polypipe WMS were able to offer a value-engineered, hybrid modular cell system using its Polystorm and Polystorm Lite products to cope with uneven burial depths on-site. Following consultation with both the MoD and contractor, Polypipe WMS also designed an additional manifold system to improve hydraulic performance.
Approximately 3000 Polystorm and Polystorm Lite cells were installed on-site to attenuate excess surface water run-off from both hard standing and roof areas. Lengths of Ridgidrain structured-wall pipe were also provided to connect the new hybrid cell system to the existing drainage network.
By changing the specification from the original box culvert solution, the project was undertaken at a much lower cost and with very few problems during the installation stage.
