Polypipe Civils has worked closely with Beighton Construction Ltd to supply a hybrid sustainable drainage solution as part of an extension to the production facility of casting specialist, Williams Lee Ltd in Chesterfield.

Utilising its Polystorm and Polystorm Xtra modular cell systems, Polypipe Civils designed and supplied the hybrid structure to attenuate surface water run-off from the hard standing areas of the new extension. Over 1,900 cells were installed at a depth of two metres, with a 500mm compacted sand and hardcore cover to support the construction of a new car park.

Installing the products at this depth and within the designed footprint of 43 x 7.5 metres was made possible by the inclusion of Polystorm Xtra on top of the Polystorm cells. The hybrid installation ensures that the required attenuation capacity could be achieved with a cell-depth of one metre, without the need to alter the development footprint, or change the cover depth.

The handling and health and safety benefits of both the Polystorm and Polystorm Xtra cells ensured that all cells were installed on-site in only a couple of days. The Polystorm and Polystorm Xtra cells weighs just nine and six kilograms respectively, making them light enough to carry and easy to handle. With a void ratio of 95 and 94%, Polystorm and Polystorm Xtra both offer exceptional storage capacity in comparison to traditional methods of attenuation.

Andy Holmes, Contracts Director at Beighton Construction commented: “The installation of the modular cell system has been very impressive. The adaptability of the Polypipe Civils products has been of great benefit to us as we’ve been able to utilise a hybrid solution that met the requirements of the project without any need to change the installation parameters, or alter the footprint of the attenuation structure.”

Dr. Jason Shingleton, Marketing and Development Director for Polypipe Civils commented: “We have recently launched the Polystorm Xtra as the next element of our modular cell range. Amongst its key benefits is its ability to be used in both shallow installations and deep burial depths due to its exceptional loading capabilities. This project is a great example of how our range of modular cells can be combined to produce a sustainable drainage solution that meets challenging project requirements, without the need to alter the designs of the installation.”

Polypipe Civils now offers the widest range of modular cell systems within the UK. As an extension to the established modular cell range, which includes Polystorm and Polystorm Lite for use in trafficked and non-trafficked applications respectively, Polystorm Xtra offers a maximum load bearing capacity of 80 tonnes. It can be used as a standalone solution in heavily trafficked areas, or as part of a hybrid installation alongside Polystorm or Polystorm Lite cells.
